Singapore-based food-technology startup Dynamic Foodco is working to tackle Singapore’s food security issue and will be launching Dynameat plant-based chicken alternative by the end of 2022. Dynamic Foodco will be using the seed funds raised to deepen its research and development capabilities, strengthen its core team and build its IP facility as it works to commercialize the product.
“With Dynameat, we want to offer a plant-based meat alternative that is delicious, nutritious, affordable, scalable and less susceptible to supply chain shocks like the recent Malaysian chicken export ban,” said Dr. Andy Kusumo, founder and CEO of Dynamic Foodco. “Dynamic Foodco will be leveraging technology to address not only the short-term chicken shortage but also Singapore’s long-term food security needs.”
Revenues from alternative proteins could reach US$290 billion by 2035, according to BCG, a consultancy. But adoption in Asia has been hampered by taste, pricing and supply chain issues. Unlike other plant-based food products that cater more toward Western markets, Dynameat is tailored for Asian palates and will also focus on keeping prices affordable for everyone, so that plant-based alternatives can create positive impacts.
“Our priority is to offer chicken-rice lovers a plant-based alternative that won’t break the bank or burden the environment,” Dr. Kusumo said. “I love meats but I also know that current meat consumption and production is not sustainable. In Asia, consumption of meat and seafood is expected to increase 78 percent by 2050. We need to address it now with the next-generation of plant-based meat alternatives that cater to tastebuds first.”
Established in 2021, Dynamic Foodco leverages Dr. Kusumo’s experience as the first scientist and R&D Head in Asia for Quorn, a pioneer in the alternative protein space; his prior stint at biopharma Merck and Amgen; and his chemical engineering degrees from Cornell University and Carnegie Mellon University, to push the boundaries of plant- based meat alternatives. The Dynamic Foodco team is backed by an advisory board comprised of food industry veterans to help scale the business.
Dynamic Foodco’s TnTTM technology (Taste and Texture) transforms ordinary plant ingredients into sustainable food solution for the masses. The company’s technology philosophy is not ingredient-centric but consumer-centric — so the ingredients used in the plant-based products are not static. Dynamic Foodco plans develop its technology platform so that it can collaborate with other Singapore-based science and tech companies that focuses on agriculture and fermentation. The goal is to accelerate the availability of tasty, affordable plant-based products in the market and create an integrated plant-based infrastructure in Singapore. Dynamic Foodco plans to scale beyond Singapore into other parts of Asia in the near future.
“A sustainable food system cannot rely on only a few sources of meat,” Dr. Kusumo said. “As we become increasingly aware of the consequences of the meat industry, we need to improve plant-based solutions as an industry so that they offer all the good things like meat but with a sustainable profile.”
