Currently, agriculture accounts (on average) for 70 percent of all freshwater withdrawals globally (and an even higher share of “consumptive water use” due to the evapotranspiration of crops), as per The World Bank estimates.
The single most significant advance in modern agriculture, invented in Israel in 1959, is drip irrigation, which increases crop yield, quality and consistency while using less water.
