Expert Talk: Smart Water Systems for Agriculture

Water is a critical input for agricultural production and plays an important role in food security. Currently, agriculture accounts (on average) for 70 percent of all freshwater withdrawals globally (and an even higher share of “consumptive water use” due to the evapotranspiration of crops), as per The World Bank estimates.

The single most significant advance in modern agriculture, invented in Israel in 1959, is drip irrigation, which increases crop yield, quality and consistency while using less water. Since then, Israel stands out in the field of precision agriculture and related sub-sectors of water management, data science, drones and sensors.
